Revit matches the MEP market, whereas AS matches the structural steel market. If you wan to create structures you would use Advance Steel or Revit. So if you want to create machinery, you would use Inventor.

They have all kinds of software to cover all areas of the market, and various softwares overlap, but none of them play well together. One thing about Autodesk is they are what what some people call 'a mile wide and an inch deep'. It all has to do with what features you want to get in a software. For example, there's CNC machining, architectural, structural, landscaping, etc. Then there's the the specialty CAD software. There's a lot to know to pick the best CAD software for your needs. Then there's the 3d CAD you want to use for processing mesh/surface data vs parametric modeling, which is related to 3d printing.

I really can't afford Catia and that level of software. Some that I looked at were ZW3D, IronCAD and SolidEdge. There's other 3d CAD programs, but I can't talk about many of them b/c I never used them. It has to do with how the software works and the work-flows involved with doing projects using the software. The way I look at it is, IV is for mechanical thinkers (categorical thinkers) and SW is for electrical thinkers (scatterbrains). The other problem is, learning style/thinking style.В IV appeals to one kind of learning style, whereas SW appeals to another. The ratio of SW to IV is like 10:1 (or worse!). You don't want them cussing you out for not giving them tools that'll serve them in their adult years.ДЇor example: Although I like inventor more than SolidWorks, I've experienced great difficulty finding jobs with companies who use Inventor.

If you go with 3d CAD you will want to think about the future when the kids are looking for jobs. If you go with 2d CAD, you can get whatever fits your requirements.
